Unlike targeted pharmaceutical treatments, adaptogens are believed to work non-specifically, meaning they support the body's overall response to stress rather than targeting one isolated symptom. The key concept behind adaptogenic compounds is homeostasis: the natural state of internal balance that the human body constantly strives to maintain.

On a physiological level, research suggests these botanical compounds interact with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This complex feedback network controls the body's response to stress, managing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. By modulating the HPA axis, adaptogens may help smooth out the physiological highs and lows associated with chronic stress, preventing the dramatic energy crashes that often follow a stressful event.

Common adaptogens include well-known herbs such as Ashwagandha, Rhodiola Rosea, Holy Basil (Tulsi), and Siberian Ginseng. Each herb possesses its own unique chemical profile, but they all share the fundamental property of helping the body build resilience over time. While they are not a cure for chronic stress, they are increasingly recognised as valuable tools in a holistic wellness routine.

  • Supporting the stress response: Several studies suggest that adaptogens like Ashwagandha may help regulate cortisol levels during periods of pressure. However, more large-scale clinical trials are needed to fully confirm these effects in diverse populations.
  • Reducing mental fatigue: Some evidence suggests that Rhodiola Rosea can improve mental alertness and reduce feelings of burnout in individuals experiencing prolonged work-related stress. Nonetheless, individual responses can vary significantly, and it should not replace healthy lifestyle adjustments.
  • Enhancing sleep quality: Adaptogenic herbs are traditionally used to promote a sense of calm, which may indirectly support better sleep patterns and nocturnal rest. Despite this, clinical evidence linking adaptogens directly to improved insomnia symptoms remains limited.
  • Supporting immune function: Certain adaptogenic mushrooms, such as Reishi, contain beta-glucans that some research indicates may help support normal immune function. However, these findings are primarily based on laboratory studies, and clinical evidence in humans is still developing.
  • Promoting cognitive performance: Early research into Siberian Ginseng suggests it may help maintain concentration and mental clarity during demanding tasks. Even so, these cognitive supports are generally mild and should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for cognitive impairment.

How to take it

Adaptogens are available in various forms, including capsules, standardised tablets, liquid tinctures, and loose herbal teas. Because each plant is chemically distinct, there is no single standard dose for all adaptogens. For example, daily doses of Ashwagandha extract often range from 300mg to 600mg, while Rhodiola Rosea is typically taken in doses of 100mg to 300mg per day. It is generally recommended to start with a lower dose to assess tolerance and to take these supplements consistently over several weeks, as their effects are thought to build gradually in the system.

Safety and who should avoid it

Although adaptogens are generally considered safe for most healthy adults, they are active botanicals and may not be suitable for primary wellness routines in every scenario. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid adaptogens, as there is insufficient safety data regarding their effects on developing babies. Furthermore, because adaptogens can interact with the immune system and hormone production, anyone with an autoimmune condition, thyroid disorder, or hormone-sensitive condition should consult a qualified GP before taking them. They may also interact with prescription medications, such as immunosuppressants, thyroid hormones, and anticoagulants.
