Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is the dried root of Withania somnifera, a small shrub in the nightshade family grown across India and parts of North Africa. Its characteristic constituents are steroidal lactones known as withanolides, which is why quality extracts are standardised to a stated withanolide percentage rather than to root weight alone.

Honest information about Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is included in our formulas as a botanical ingredient with traditional wellness heritage. No authorised health claim has been approved for it under EU or GB law, so we share only its identity, origin, dose and documented history — never implied benefits.

Claims held “on hold” pending evaluation are treated here as unauthorised. We will not imply an effect through images, testimonials or suggestive wording either.

Forms and what appears on a label

Labels list either whole root powder or a root extract. Extracts carry a ratio (for example 10:1) or a standardisation figure (typically 2.5–5% withanolides). Leaf material is cheaper and chemically different from root, so a root-only declaration is the more meaningful specification.

Dose and how we use it

Featured in Sleep & Calm.

Take daily for at least eight weeks to feel the cumulative benefit.

Documented traditional use

Ashwagandha appears in Ayurvedic texts spanning several thousand years, where it is classified as a rasayana — a category of tonic preparations. We record that history as history: traditional classification is not evidence of an effect and is not an authorised claim.

What research has — and has not — established

Ashwagandha is among the more studied botanicals, with randomised trials in stress, sleep quality and exercise performance. Most are small, short (4–12 weeks), use different extracts at different doses, and are frequently funded by extract suppliers. No conclusion from that literature has passed EU or GB claim authorisation, so nothing in it may be presented as an established benefit.

Cautions and interactions

Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek advice first if you take thyroid medication, sedatives, immunosuppressants or diabetes medication, or if you have an autoimmune condition. Discontinue and seek advice if you experience abdominal discomfort or unusual drowsiness.
