Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is the fruit of Serenoa repens, a fan palm native to the south-eastern United States. Supplements use a lipid extract rich in free fatty acids and phytosterols.

Honest information about Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is included in our formulas as a botanical ingredient with traditional wellness heritage. No authorised health claim has been approved for it under EU or GB law, so we share only its identity, origin, dose and documented history — never implied benefits.

Claims held “on hold” pending evaluation are treated here as unauthorised. We will not imply an effect through images, testimonials or suggestive wording either.

Forms and what appears on a label

The meaningful specification is a CO2 or hexane lipidosterolic extract declaring 85–95% free fatty acids. Dried berry powder is not equivalent to a lipid extract at the same milligram figure.

Where it comes from

Fruit of the Serenoa repens palm tree.

Dose and how we use it

Featured in Prostate Vitality.

Often taken in doses of 160mg to 320mg daily.

Documented traditional use

Saw palmetto berries have documented use by indigenous peoples of Florida and later in 19th-century American medical practice.

What research has — and has not — established

Saw palmetto has been studied extensively in lower urinary tract symptoms in men. Large, well-controlled trials, including STEP and CAMUS, did not find benefit over placebo. We state that plainly rather than selecting the more favourable earlier literature. No EU or GB health claim is authorised.

Cautions and interactions

For adult men only; not for use by women, and not during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek advice if you take anticoagulants or hormonal medicines. It may affect PSA test results — tell your doctor you are taking it before testing.
