Berberine

Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid found in the roots and bark of several plants, including Berberis species, goldenseal and Oregon grape. It is intensely yellow and bitter.

Honest information about Berberine

Berberine is included in our formulas as a botanical ingredient with traditional wellness heritage. No authorised health claim has been approved for it under EU or GB law, so we share only its identity, origin, dose and documented history — never implied benefits.

Claims held “on hold” pending evaluation are treated here as unauthorised. We will not imply an effect through images, testimonials or suggestive wording either.

Forms and what appears on a label

Usually supplied as berberine hydrochloride, declared in milligrams of the salt. Absorption is low and dosing is generally divided across the day for tolerability.

Where it comes from

Barberry, goldenseal and Oregon grape.

Dose and how we use it

Included in Glycaemic, Metabolism and Thermo Vitality.

Typically taken 500mg three times daily, 30 minutes before meals.

What research has — and has not — established

Berberine has been studied in metabolic parameters, mostly in small trials of varying quality and often outside Europe. It is under active regulatory scrutiny in several markets because of its pharmacological character. No EU or GB health claim is authorised.

Cautions and interactions

Not for use in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in infants and children. Do not use alongside glucose-lowering or blood-pressure medication without professional advice. Interacts with medicines processed by CYP3A4 and with ciclosporin. Seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before use.
