Amino acid

L-Theanine

L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found almost exclusively in tea leaves and a few fungi. It is structurally related to glutamate.

Honest information about L-Theanine

L-Theanine is included in our formulas as a botanical ingredient with traditional wellness heritage. No authorised health claim has been approved for it under EU or GB law, so we share only its identity, origin, dose and documented history — never implied benefits.

Claims held “on hold” pending evaluation are treated here as unauthorised. We will not imply an effect through images, testimonials or suggestive wording either.

Forms and what appears on a label

Supplements use the L-isomer, often as a patented fermentation-derived material. Racemic DL-theanine is a different specification and should be declared as such.

Where it comes from

Green tea, black tea and some mushrooms.

Dose and how we use it

Paired with caffeine in Cognitive Vitality to provide smooth, focused energy.

Can be taken at any time of day, often alongside a morning coffee or before a stressful task.

What research has — and has not — established

Trials have examined attention, subjective calm and interaction with caffeine, mostly acute, small and in healthy volunteers. Effects reported are small and not consistently reproduced. No EU or GB health claim is authorised.

Cautions and interactions

Well tolerated in studies to date. Not established for use in pregnancy, breastfeeding or children. Seek advice if you take blood-pressure medication or sedatives.
