Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulphur-containing compound synthesised in the body and present in small amounts in foods such as offal and spinach. It is unusual in being soluble in both water and fat.

Honest information about Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-Lipoic Acid is included in our formulas as a botanical ingredient with traditional wellness heritage. No authorised health claim has been approved for it under EU or GB law, so we share only its identity, origin, dose and documented history — never implied benefits.

Claims held “on hold” pending evaluation are treated here as unauthorised. We will not imply an effect through images, testimonials or suggestive wording either.

Forms and what appears on a label

Sold as racemic alpha-lipoic acid or as the R-isomer (R-ALA). The R form is the one the body makes; racemic material contains both isomers, so equal milligram figures are not equivalent.

Where it comes from

Red meat, spinach, broccoli and yeast.

Dose and how we use it

Included in Serenity Vitality and Metabolism Vitality.

Best taken on an empty stomach for maximum absorption.

What research has — and has not — established

Most clinical work concerns diabetic neuropathy in patient populations, at pharmacological doses and often intravenously. That literature does not transfer to food-supplement use, and no EU or GB health claim is authorised.

Cautions and interactions

May lower blood glucose — seek advice before use if you take diabetes medication. Not established for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Rare reports of insulin autoimmune syndrome exist.
