What is L-Citrulline?

L-citrulline was first isolated from watermelon in 1914, which explains its name, derived from the Latin word citrullus. As a non-essential amino acid, the body can synthesise it from other nutrients, but it is also found in dietary sources such as squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, and gourds. Unlike other amino acids, the body does not use L-citrulline to build proteins directly. Instead, it serves as a critical player in the urea cycle, a series of chemical reactions that helps process and eliminate toxic ammonia from the body.

How it works

Once absorbed, a large portion of L-citrulline is converted by the kidneys into another amino acid called L-arginine, which is then transformed into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a powerful vasodilator, meaning it helps relax and widen blood vessels. By encouraging the blood vessels to open up, L-citrulline supports smoother blood flow throughout the body, delivering vital oxygen and nutrients to active tissues.

Supplements typically come in two main forms: free-form L-citrulline and citrulline malate. The latter is L-citrulline bound with malate, an organic compound involved in the body's cellular energy production cycle. While both forms aim to increase nitric oxide levels, athletes often prefer citrulline malate due to its potential dual action on blood flow and cellular energy generation.

  • May support healthy blood circulation: By boosting nitric oxide production, L-citrulline helps relax blood vessels, which may support overall cardiovascular function and healthy blood pressure levels. However, it should not replace prescribed medications for high blood pressure or heart disease.
  • May enhance athletic endurance: Higher nitric oxide levels can increase oxygen delivery to working muscles, which may help delay the onset of muscle fatigue during prolonged exercise. Nevertheless, individual response can vary significantly depending on fitness level and exercise intensity.
  • May assist with post-exercise recovery: Some studies suggest that L-citrulline helps clear metabolic waste products, such as ammonia and lactic acid, from the bloodstream, which may reduce muscle soreness after a heavy workout. Still, more standardised trials are needed to confirm these post-recovery benefits across different populations.
  • May support men's cardiovascular and sexual wellness: Because it encourages healthy pelvic blood flow through vasodilation, L-citrulline may support mild erectile dysfunction symptoms in men. However, it is not a cure and is less effective than targeted medical treatments.
  • May improve oxygen uptake during aerobic activity: Some clinical trials suggest that supplementing with L-citrulline can help the body make more efficient use of oxygen during moderate-intensity cycling or running. Even so, these effects are generally modest, and the supplement should always be used alongside a structured training plan.

How to take it

When choosing to supplement, a typical daily dose of free-form L-citrulline is between 3 to 6 grams. If you are using citrulline malate, a higher dose of approximately 6 to 8 grams is often recommended because it contains a mix of both L-citrulline and malate in varying ratios, usually 2:1. For athletic performance, it is generally best taken about 30 to 60 minutes before physical activity to allow nitric oxide levels to peak. If you are using it to support general cardiovascular health, the daily dose can be divided and taken with meals throughout the day.

Safety and who should avoid it

L-citrulline is generally considered safe and well-tolerated by most healthy adults, with very few reported side effects even at higher doses. However, because it acts as a vasodilator to naturally lower blood pressure, those currently taking prescription medications for hypertension or heart conditions must exercise caution and consult their physician first. It should also be avoided by anyone taking nitrates or phosphodiesterase inhibitors, such as sildenafil, as this combination could cause a dangerous, sudden drop in blood pressure. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking therapeutic doses of this supplement due to a lack of long-term safety data in these groups.
