It is important to consult a GP for a simple blood test before starting high-dose supplements to determine which nutrient your body actually lacks.

While both nutrients are vital, they require caution. Excess iron can accumulate in the body and cause damage to organs, a condition known as iron overload; therefore, iron supplements should only be taken if a deficiency has been confirmed by a healthcare professional. People with genetic conditions like haemochromatosis must avoid iron supplements entirely. Vitamin B12 is water-soluble, meaning the body generally excretes any excess in urine, making it highly safe. However, high doses can occasionally interact with certain medications, such as proton pump inhibitors or metformin, so anyone taking long-term prescription medication should seek advice from a doctor before introducing these supplements.
